A quest to restore trust and improve financial services
Nick couldn't believe that wealth management was so expensive or so random. Fees eat a giant part of returns, portfolios receive different levels of service, relationships are often condescending and unless you are wealthy you can't join the club! Nick escaped with a mission to transform the industry; to set up a smart, user-friendly on-line investment company available to everyone: Nutmeg.
How I can help Escape the City members
Hope we can help! Happy to connect with entrepreneurs who are looking to disrupt industries dominated by incumbents, those who want to talk through giving up big money for the challenge of a start-up and any general stuff - if you think we can be useful.
We'd especially love to meet smart people who are passionate about finance and want to do something important and meaningful with their lives; those who want to work in an environment that is politics free, exciting, fast moving and full of energy.
1) What are you currently doing with your life?
Having incredible fun transforming the investment industry and democratising saving and investing.
Nutmeg is the first company in the world to offer smart, transparent saving and investing to everyone in the UK. Endorsed by the UK Government (UKTI) and backed by investors from the US and UK, Nutmeg offers academically rigorous investment solutions based on the latest portfolio theories to users for as little as £1,000 or £100 a month.
Nutmeg is completely different from any other investment company. We are focused on building a wonderful user experience, making sure Nutmeg supports people through life changes and important moments such as buying a house, getting married, having a baby, or changing job :)
We are also figuring out how to make saving and investing more personal. We want to give people the level of control that they feel comfortable with and to find out each individuals true investor personality.
2) What did you do before this?
Immediately before Nutmeg I was completing my MBA at Stanford Business School.
3) What was your moment of truth?
I was taking a class at Stanford taught by legendary VC Peter Wendell, Andy Rachleff a financial technology entrepreneur and Eric Schmidt, CEO Google. We were designing business plans and I pitched the idea for Nutmeg. They told me this was one of the biggest opportunities out there and I'd be a fool not to chase it.... I couldn't really turn around and tell them 'no'!
4) How did you plan for it?
I had dreamed of transforming the investment industry and knew from watching companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter grow that by transforming the user experience, striving for simplicity and including technology any industry can be changed. The user experience of investing is currently a disaster; improve / change / re-design it and we have a chance.
When I graduated from Stanford I spent 3 months sleeping on friends floors, working on the business plan and seeking funding for the business. I knocked on the doors of numerous investors. I had no money, I was relying on the kindness of others.
I eventually convinced one of the world's premier investors - Tim Draper - to help seed Nutmeg and, in transition back to the UK, pitched to and won backing from Pentech. I then started to build the team and implement the business plans.
5) What have been the best and worst things about making this happen?
Best is definitely working with an incredible team of people who completely believe in the idea and have all the skills to make it happen. We know that through Nutmeg we have the opportunity to improve financial futures. We can help people buy the dream house, plan the dream wedding, provide for their children and retire in comfort. That gets us all up in the morning!
No bad bits so far. Some dark times, but that's a good challenge.
6) What was the best advice you have received
'Just because it hasn't been done before doesn't mean that it can't be done'
'Hire people who are better than you'
'Agree tangible milestones with investors and your team'
'Be prepared for everyone to think you're crazy'
7) What resources or information have you found really helpful?
The UK Government have been very helpful, particularly the UKTI.
